Are you worried about catching the flu this winter? If so, The Walcote Practice may be able to help with this year’s seasonal flu vaccine, available to adults and children for only £20.00 (no consultation fee applies).

The flu is a contagious virus spread by coughs and sneezes. Symptoms start suddenly and can be severe, including:

  • fever of 38C (100.4F) or above
  • tiredness and weakness which may last for several weeks
  • headache, general aches and pains
  • dry, chesty cough
  • blocked or runny nose, sneezing, and sore throat

Flu can make you feel very exhausted and unwell, meaning that you may need to stay in bed and rest until you feel better.

This year’s flu vaccination is now available from The Walcote Practice. We continue to see the impact of the pandemic and this winter we will need to consider co-circulation of COVID-19 and flu. This makes it all the more important to protect yourself and others through flu vaccination. Those most at risk from flu are also those most vulnerable to COVID-19. Whilst it does not yet guarantee 100% protection against the flu, the flu vaccine does significantly reduce your chances of catching the virus.

We offer the two first line influenza vaccinations, both quadrivalent (targeting the four prevailing types, including swine flu): cell derived for those up to 65yrs old and adjuvant for those 65yrs old and over. The latter vaccine stimulates the immune system more effectively in the older age group. Children over two years may have the cell derived vaccine although the nasal spray offered through the school and NHS programmes is first line. We expect to obtain a supply of the nasal spray later in the season. Those under two years old are a special group who would not normally be offered the flu vaccine unless they have specific vulnerability – individual cases may be discussed with our doctors.

For your immune system to remain current and effective against the prevailing strains, the flu vaccine is required every year, preferably before November, when cases begin to rise. COVID-19 booster vaccinations will continue to be provided through the public mass vaccination programmes.
