Men’s Health

Men experience higher rates of certain diseases and a shorter life expectancy than women. On average in the UK, men die nearly four years earlier than women and face disproportionately higher rates of cancers, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and suicide. In other words, men tend to live sicker and die younger than women. The reasons for this are multiple, interconnected and complex.

The good news is that every man can take basic steps to significantly increase his chances of living a healthier, happier and longer life. These steps include:

  • Making Healthy Lifestyle Changes – these can be simple and effective
  • Taking Safety Measures – do this proactively as appropriate, eg use sunscreen, a seatbelt, safety helmet, safety ladder, safer sex practices and protection etc
  • Avoiding Health-Risk Behaviours – such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, casual sex and/or drug use
  • Monthly Testicular Exam – undertake a monthly self-examination of the testicles, starting at puberty – the correct technique can be found here
  • Prostate Cancer Awareness – be aware of the symptoms of prostate changes/cancer and visit the GP immediately if experiencing any of these at any age, eg urinating more than usual, having a sudden urge to urinate, getting up often in the night to urinate, blood in the urine, problems getting or keeping an erection etc
  • Seeing a Health Practitioner – when feeling ill or needing to improve health, and making sure to attend any scheduled health screening or vaccinations; it is easier and much more effective to treat health issues early. Ideally, a doctor’s visit for a check-up should be undertaken annually as a minimum.
  • Detecting & Managing Chronic Illness – such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes etc – the GP can help with this
  • Seeking Help For Health Changes – seek help if noticing body changes, eg a bigger waist size/tummy, for any new health issues that may emerge when trying to conceive and/or with aging (eg symptoms of a declining testosterone level) or if having trouble coping with stress or life issues.
